EGO battery storage: winter care and self-maintenance

Before storing an EGO 56V battery for winter, disconnect it from the tool, keep it dry, and follow the storage section in the manual for its exact model. Some listed packs perform automatic self-maintenance after a month; that behavior does not apply to every EGO battery.

Why a stored battery can show less charge

EGO’s 56V battery manual says that, depending on its charge, a supported battery automatically performs a self-discharge operation after one month of storage. It then enters sleep mode and maintains about 30% charge. The manual specifically excludes BA2240T and BA2240T-FC; check the model printed on your pack before applying this explanation.

This process can explain a lower charge reading after a long idle period. It is not, by itself, proof that the battery is defective. EGO’s troubleshooting section says to fully recharge the listed pack before use after more than one month of non-use. If it will not charge or the issue repeats, use the exact manual’s troubleshooting steps and contact EGO support.

Storage questionWhat EGO says
Self-maintenance after a monthBA1400T, BA2242T, BA2800T, BA4200T, BA5600T and BA6720T (and their -FC versions listed in this manual); behavior depends on charge.
Excluded from this functionBA2240T and BA2240T-FC. Do not assume the same cycle applies.
Returning to useAfter a month or longer stored, fully recharge before use, as this manual directs.

For storage beyond 30 days, follow the manual’s stated conditions

For the battery models listed above, EGO says to store the pack below 80°F (26°C) and free of moisture. It recommends a 30%–50% charged condition for storage longer than 30 days and a full charge every six months. These are manual-specific instructions; use the current manual for a different pack or revision.

The same manual says to charge only when the ambient temperature is above 41°F (5°C) and below 104°F (40°C). Do not infer a charging or storage temperature for another model from this guide. Let a pack return to the range stated in its own instructions before charging. Store the charger according to its own manual; the battery guidance does not establish a charger storage rule.

EGO also says it is good practice to unplug the charger and remove the battery when not in use. Keep the battery away from loose metal objects that could bridge its contacts, and do not store it in a damp location. For a pack that will sit through a season, choose a dry place that stays within its manual’s limits rather than relying on the word “garage” to describe its conditions.

Prepare the battery and charger before the first job

Use this short sequence when putting equipment away and again when work resumes:

  1. Read the model number on the battery and locate its matching EGO manual. Do the same for the charger.
  2. Remove the pack from the tool. Check the case and contacts for visible dirt or damage; clean the exterior only as the manual allows.
  3. Apply the storage charge, temperature, moisture and inspection intervals specified for that pack. Use the storage conditions recorded from the matching manual; if its periodic charging instruction does not explain how to return the pack to the specified storage charge, ask EGO for model-specific guidance.
  4. Keep battery and charger dry and follow each product’s own storage directions. Unplug the charger and remove the battery when idle, as the cited battery manual recommends.
  5. Before seasonal use, inspect the pack and charger, then recharge the battery according to their manuals. Verify fit for your mower or tool in the EGO mower battery compatibility guide.

Use the EGO battery calculator to estimate capacity needs, and check EGO charger compatibility and charge times or mower kit battery and charger contents when planning the setup.

Read the exact indicator pattern before diagnosing a pack

Battery, tool and charger indicators can have different meanings. A light color alone is not a universal diagnosis. Note the battery and charger model numbers, which LEDs are lit or flashing, and the sequence or timing; then compare that observation with the matching manuals. The cited battery manual, for example, documents more than one LED pattern for self-maintenance across battery versions.

If an unfamiliar pattern persists, charging does not resume as the manual describes, or the pack appears damaged, stop troubleshooting and contact EGO support. Do not open, jump-start, or bypass protections on the pack. For a wet, leaking, smoking, unusually hot or otherwise damaged battery, stop use and charging, keep clear, and contact EGO for safe handling and disposal guidance. If there is active smoke or fire, contact emergency services.

Common questions

Do EGO batteries self-discharge during storage?

The cited EGO manual says the listed BA1400T, BA2242T, BA2800T, BA4200T, BA5600T and BA6720T (and their -FC versions listed in this manual) packs can begin self-maintenance after a month of storage depending on charge, then enter sleep mode at about 30%. It excludes BA2240T and BA2240T-FC. Recharge before use after a month or more.

What charge level should I store an EGO battery at?

For storage longer than 30 days, EGO advises 30%–50% charge, below 80°F (26°C), and a dry location. It also says to fully charge every six months. If the manual does not say how to return the pack to its recommended storage charge afterward, ask EGO for guidance for your exact model.

Can I leave an EGO battery on its charger for winter?

The cited battery manual says it is good practice to unplug the charger and remove the battery when not in use. Follow the exact charger manual for storage and charging instructions.

What should I do if my EGO battery lights flash or stay red?

Record the battery and charger model numbers and the exact light pattern, then check the matching manuals. Battery, tool and charger indicators differ. If the issue persists, contact EGO support; do not open or jump-start the pack. If it is damaged, stop use and charging and contact EGO for safe handling and disposal guidance.
